Dealer PDI vs Independent PDI: What Is the Difference?
Dealer PDI is part of the seller's pre-delivery process. An independent PDI is a separate inspection arranged by the buyer to document the allocated car's observed condition. One does not replace the other's responsibilities. Confirm access, the checklist and reporting before booking; neither is a promise that future faults are impossible.
Before you decide
- Ask what the dealer has checked and what record is available for your vehicle.
- Confirm permission for a buyer-arranged inspector before selecting a slot.
- Compare the actual scope and report, not just a headline checkpoint count.
- Keep inspection findings, the dealer's response and any recheck together.
The same abbreviation can describe two different arrangements
When a dealer says the PDI is complete, ask which checks were completed, on which vehicle, and what record you can review. That conversation is different from appointing a separate inspector yourself. Both involve the car before handover, but the people arranging the work and the report you receive may differ.
Ask the dealer which delivery records are available for your allocated car. Check the current owner manual and handover process for your own model; paperwork and checklists should not be assumed to be identical across brands. Manufacturer guidance, such as Maruti Suzuki's owner-manual links, is useful for model-specific instructions.
An independent inspection gives you another documented view within the scope and access agreed. It is not a replacement for the dealer's delivery paperwork, the manufacturer's warranty terms, or specialist diagnosis when needed.
Compare the roles, not just the name
A long checkpoint count alone does not tell you whether the report will answer your questions. Ask whether the checklist suits a petrol, diesel or electric vehicle, how findings are recorded and how unavailable checks are described. An item that could not be inspected must not be assumed to have passed.
| Question | Dealer PDI | Buyer-arranged independent PDI |
|---|---|---|
| Who coordinates it? | The dealer as part of its delivery process; ask for the vehicle-specific details. | You book a separate provider and agree on dealer access. |
| What is checked? | Confirm the manufacturer's or dealer's applicable handover checklist. | The selected provider's stated checklist, subject to vehicle type and access. |
| What record should you ask for? | The available PDI or delivery record for the allocated vehicle. | Recorded observations, supporting evidence and any inspection limitations. |
| Who addresses a concern? | Discuss the finding with the dealer and agree on the response. | The inspector records findings; buying decisions and repair arrangements remain separate. |
Arrange access before committing to an inspection slot
Ask the dealer to confirm the exact allocated vehicle and its location. A display car, a demonstration vehicle or a different car of the same variant cannot stand in for the vehicle you are receiving. Share the model, fuel type, VIN when available and location with the provider.
Showroom and stockyard access can differ. Establish who will provide the keys, when the car will be available, and whether there are limits on photography, equipment or a road test. Do not assume that an online booking grants access to private premises or permission for every check.
- Confirm the correct vehicle and exact showroom or stockyard address.
- Ask for permission for the inspection and any planned checks.
- Share known access, lighting or timing restrictions before the visit.
- Confirm the chosen service, price and how the report will be provided.
A message you can send to the dealer
I would like to arrange an independent inspection of my allocated car before delivery. Please confirm the VIN or allocated vehicle details, the inspection address and a suitable time. Please also confirm who will provide access and keys, which checks are permitted, and whether any restrictions apply. I would like time to review any findings and your response before handover.
This is a coordination request, not a statement of legal entitlement or a guarantee that a particular appointment is available. Resolve access questions with the dealer and inspection provider before making travel arrangements.
If the two sets of findings differ
Start with the observation rather than deciding which party must be wrong. Check that both records refer to the same car and ask when each check was made. Identify the affected area, the recorded condition and any supporting photo or reading. A broad statement that the car was checked does not answer a specific question about a recorded concern.
Ask the dealer for an explanation and a documented response. If an item is corrected, ask how you can confirm that correction. Keep the original finding and the follow-up record together instead of treating an unverified verbal assurance as a completed recheck.
If the concern requires specialist testing, arrange appropriate diagnosis. Do not attempt a repair just to settle a disagreement. The manufacturer's instructions take priority for safe handling; Maruti Suzuki's car-care guidance, for example, warns against opening a hot radiator cap.
Decide whether the additional inspection answers your questions
An independent PDI may be useful when you want a separate documented assessment of the car you will receive. Before choosing a provider, review its actual checklist, sample report, evidence format and stated limitations. Ask what happens if access prevents a check, rather than expecting every component to be tested under every condition.
For InspecXO, select the appropriate new-car petrol, diesel or EV service and confirm the active service area. Inspection findings and applicable evidence are organized into the digital report after the workflow and review. Slot availability and access must be confirmed for the exact vehicle location.
Use the findings to inform your delivery decision. A PDI does not guarantee future reliability, reveal every hidden fault, or replace the vehicle's warranty and maintenance requirements.
